Brasilia, March 23 (teleSUR-RHC) The Brazilian Intelligence Agency (ABIN) is concerned about the possible recruitment of fighters in the South American country by the Islamic State group, local press reported.

According to a government source, the extremist organization is looking for young fighters in Brazil to join its ranks and conduct "lone wolf" terrorist activity in the Middle East region.

Local authorities have considered that terrorism is the main threat to the Summer Olympic Games the South American nation will host in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.

Early this year, security services raised the terrorist threat level for the event, following the attacks in Paris against the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine and a supermarket, which left at least 12 people dead.

The Islamic State has taken over large areas of Iraq and Syria, while its fighters have been committing grave crimes in the areas they control, including the mass execution of civilians as well as Iraqi and Syrian army troops and officers.

The extremist organization claims to have recruited hundreds, perhaps thousands, of fighters from the U.K., France, Germany and other European countries, as well as from the U.S., the Arab world and the Caucasus.

The violence carried out by this group has caused the displacement of about 1.2 million people, according to U.N. humanitarian aid workers.
