San José, April 08 (PL-RHC) Some 50,000 people are registered to date as possible candidates for various positions in the municipal elections to be held in Costa Rica on February 7, 2016.

This time 3,150,000 citizens can exercise their right to vote in 5,700 polling stations throughout the country enabled with 700 voters each, and define who will be the 6,069 officers who will guide the 81 municipalities of the territory.
The seats at stake in this election are for mayors, aldermen, councilors and intendants of administrative districts and their respective alternates.
During the process, representatives of the district councils will also be chosen in constituencies in rural areas of the counties, which work with some autonomy but depend on the local municipal authorities.
According to the Costa Rica digital newspaper Hoy, this fourth municipal election will be distinguished by elections in a unified way in the middle of the presidential term, which began in May last year.
Up to 2010, the election of councilors was conducted jointly with the municipal elections, recalls the publication. It also says that the Institute for Training and Research on Democracy of the Electoral Supreme Court is engaged in training leaders of different political parties to achieve greater efficiency in the electoral process.
