Stockholm, July 27 (RHC)-- Three grenade attacks in Sweden's third largest city of Malmo alarm local police authorities over the surging violence in the city. The grenade attacks struck in the Solbacken neighborhood in the the southern Swedish city on Friday, 12 hours after a blast in the residential area of Limhamn, RT reported on Sunday.

The Malmo unrest follows the persisting trend of shootings, explosions and arsons that have taken place in the city since the beginning of the year. The city is notorious for its high crime rate, multi-ethnic and gang-related violence.

Since January, 18 explosions have hit the city, prompting the dispatch of Swedish police's national bomb squad (NSB). This is while over the entire 2014 a total of only 25 explosions were registered in Malmo, reflecting a significant hike, according to NSB's chief in the city, Goran Mansson, as cited in the local Sydsvenskan newspaper on Friday.

This is while police authorities believe the explosions are linked to a court sentencing of three youths on July 10 for their alleged roles in the Christmas Eve bombing in Rosengard -- the city district widely described by local media as Sweden's "most notorious refugee ghetto," where nine out of ten residents are reportedly of foreign background.

Only 38 percent of Rosengard residents are reportedly jobless, prompting its restive youth population to resort to rioting and crime. Local expert, Adrian Groglopo of the University of Gothenburg, said the country's young population is being hit the hardest by "racism and segregation in Sweden."
