Caracas, August 12 (RHC-teleSUR) -- The nations of the Latin American and Caribbean integration bloc ALBA have released a joint declaration expressing grave concern over the humanitarian crisis in Europe around the growing migrant crisis.
Following a special session in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas Monday, the organization called for a global Solidarity Plan with Asia and Africa, involving a donation of 20 percent of each country’s military budget to social investment in those regions.
The statement, consisting of 10 points, blamed Western imperialism and capitalism for the crisis, which this year alone has claimed the lives of more than 2,000 migrants who have drowned in the treacherous journey to cross the Mediterranean Sea.
The document says: “The principal cause of the humanitarian tragedies that have turned the Mediterranean Sea into a huge, deep grave, is the colonial and neo-colonial capitalist model, that has subjected the people of Africa and Asia to underdevelopment and destroyed productivity models, putting them at the service of Western metropolises.”
