Damascus, August 31 (RHC)-- In Syria, the self-proclaimed Islamic State has reportedly destroyed part of the most important temple in the ancient city of Palmyra.
It remains unclear how much of the 2,000-year-old Temple of Bel was destroyed by a large explosion reported in the area. ISIL has occupied Palmyra since May and recently destroyed another ancient building, the Temple of Baalshamin.
The news came after Turkish warplanes joined the U.S.-led coalition against ISIL for the first time, carrying out strikes in Syria.
