Quito, September 29 (teleSUR-RHC)-- The National Police Hospital in Quito was the site of a police rebellion nearly five years ago. President Rafael Correa was held inside the building, and the Attorney General Office of Ecuador has classified the events of Sept. 30, 2010 to be a failed coup attempt. Mateo Bolaños's brother, Juan Pablo Bolaños, was a student caught in the crossfire and killed by a police officer. Remembering the events of that day, Bolaños told teleSUR, “I saw how the police officer Froilan Jimenez was killed, and I felt something in my heart that something happened to my family there. I tried to call my brother and he did not answer, and then I got a phone call from the hospital, the clinic, saying that Juan Pablo was there. We went to see him, and this was the first time I had lost somebody close to me in my family, he was more than a brother for me, he was a constant companion, and we were always together.” Attorney General of Ecuador Galo Chiriboga says 179 people have been found guilty of the crimes committed on September 30th. While the perpetrator of Juan Pablo Bolaños's death has been sentenced, the deaths of two police officers Froilan Jimenez and Edwin Calderon, as well as two members of the armed forces Jacinto Cortez and Darwin Panchi are still under investigation. The possible declassification of related documents is expected to expedite this process. “If this declassification lets us identify those who were there, the weapons they had, and if their arms were fired or not with projectiles we found, we have a high probability of discovering who shot their weapons,” Attorney General Chiriboga told press. The Attorney General Office of Ecuador maintains that there were threats on the life of President Correa the day of the coup attempt. Five years have passed, and 251 people have been tried for their involvement. Authorities have said that impunity will not be tolerated and that investigations will continue.
