La Paz, October 12 (teleSUR-RHC)-- United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for immediate action on climate change at the World People’s Conference on Climate Change and the Defense of Life in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

The UN leader said that the victims of climate change include some of the world’s poorest people. He emphasized that they are facing the challenges of extreme weather events and climate change head-on.

The UN secretary general said: “Climate change is upon us. Here in Cochabamba you know this well,” he said. “Your Tunari Mountain used to be capped with snow all year round. Now, it has snow only a few weeks a year.”

The aim of the conference in Bolivia is to give people affected by climate change a say on how future environmental policy will be shaped. Social movements and representatives from more than 40 countries are taking part at the gathering. The focus is turning to the next big UN climate change conference in Paris, which begins in late November.
