Tegucigalpa, December 1 (teleSUR-RHC)-- The United States and Mexico have deported at least 62,882 Hondurans in 2015 alone, effectively sending thousands of people back to one of the most dangerous countries on earth. The Central American nation has the highest homicide rate —90 per 100,000 inhabitants— in the world.        
      
The vast majority of deportations came from Mexico, where 45,606 Hondurans were sent home by land this year. Another 17,276 Hondurans were sent home by air from the U.S, the non-governmental organization Center for Returned Migrants or CAMR reported Sunday, according to Spanish news agency EFE.

The figures are released amid reports of increased violence across Honduras, including four massacres in this past week alone that left 27 people dead. This is in addition to the daily violence and regular occurrence of homicides.

The CAMR offices themselves are based in San Pedro Sula, in the northern part of Honduras, where deportees from the U.S. are flown. The city is also where one of last week’s massacres took place, when eight bus drivers were shot, what is believed to be linked to a lack of payment of extortion money.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that in many cases undocumented Hondurans who were deported from the U.S. faced imminent threat of violence upon their return. This also included several individuals being murdered just days or months after their return, according to investigations by The Guardian.

The United Nations has warned that migrants coming from Honduras, as well as El Salvador and Guatemala, should be treated as refugees and not be deported since they likely face persecution in their home countries.
