CELAC Calls to Eliminate Poverty and Hunger

New York, December 12 (RHC)-- The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), has issued a call in Geneva to eradicate poverty and hunger in the world, calling them the root causes of most human rights violations in today's world.

Addressing the UN General Assembly on behalf of the 33-member regional bloc, the representative from Ecuador noted that eradicating both scourges constitute a huge political, economic and social challenge for humanity that requires a strong political commitment and joint action by both developed and developing countries.

Ecuadorian Business attache Diego Morejón pointed to ongoing programs implemented by CELAC countries toward promoting effective political, social and economic participation by regional peoples with respect for differences and diversity.

The UN General Assembly held Friday a special plenary session was dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the World Summit on Social Development, which was held in 1995 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
