New York, October 4 (RHC)-- At the UN General Assembly, Cuba has renewed its commitment to development.
Cuban Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal addressed the opening session of the works of the Second Committee on Development, in the framework of the 71st session of the General Assembly. She noted that Cuba will join, within the framework of the G77, the common purpose to build up a roadmap that allows for the gradual elimination of gaps and challenges faced worldwide in terms of development, through commitment, political will and cooperation among all Member States.
The Cuban ambassador urged States to refrain from promulgating and imposing any unilateral economic, financial or trade measures not in accordance with international law and the Charter of the United Nations. She added that even amidst the adverse circumstances under the persistent economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States, the Cuban people are immersed in a process to update their country's economic and social model toward building a more prosperous and sustainable socialist society.
At the end of her speech, the Cuba diplomat considered that the forthcoming Quadrennial Comprehensive Policy Review of Operational Activities for Development shall strengthen the intergovernmental nature of the United Nations and its agencies, funds and programs.
“Its outcome, she added, should also ensure that the system will effectively meet the needs of developing countries and will be assessed based on its contribution to the efforts of governments in eradicating poverty and achieving sustainable development.”
