New York, February 6 (RHC)-- United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres received Cuba's Permanent Representative to the UN, Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo, in her capacity as Acting Chair of the UN Special Committee on Decolonization.
During the meeting, held in a collegiate atmosphere, the Cuban diplomat presented a brief report on the activities carried out by the Decolonization Committee during 2017, and on the decisions adopted by the 29 members of the Committee.
Anayansi Rodríguez also outlined the main activities planned for 2018, which include the Committee's annual meeting, the dispatching of a Mission to the territory of New Caledonia to assist in the registration process of inhabitants in light of the independence referendum later this year, and the Regional Seminar zone.
The Cuban Ambassador was accompanied by the Permanent Representative of Indonesia and the Deputy Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone, who attended as Vice-Chairmen of the Committee. Similarly present was he Deputy Permanent Representative of Syria, in his capacity as Rapporteur.
During the meeting, the UN Secretary General expressed his commitment to the Decolonization agenda, which he described as one of the decisive mandates of the world body and confirmed his presence at the Committee's annual meeting at the end of this month.
