Havana, December 20 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel described Thursday the approval of a Caribbean resolution on Bolivia at the Organization of American States (OAS) as a resounding defeat for the United States and Luis Almagro.

The resolution 'Rejection of violence and call for full respect of the rights of indigenous peoples in the Plurinational State of Bolivia' was approved by 18 nations, with the votes against from the coup government of that country, Colombia, the United States and the self-proclaimed representative of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó.

The nations that voted in favor were Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Guyana, Grenada, Jamaica, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, Nicaragua, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Suriname, Uruguay, and Panama.

Meanwhile, Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Peru, Honduras, Brazil, Chile and Paraguay abstained, and Haiti was absent.

The resolution adopted expresses grave concerns about the human rights situation, including racist and discriminatory violence, described by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in its preliminary observations of 10 December 2019, following its visit to Bolivia.

It condemns the human rights violations against the citizens of that country, the intimidation of Bolivians of indigenous origin, and the intolerance towards symbols, traditional vestiges, and religious practices.

It also demands that the Bolivian authorities respect, comply with, and effectively implement all their obligations under international law regarding indigenous peoples, especially those obligations related to human rights.

It also calls on all political and civil actors in that South American nation to seek peace through an open dialogue that promotes national democratic reconciliation.
