Cuban President mourns death of former Uruguayan President

Havana, December 7 (RHC)--Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel mourned former Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez, who died Sunday, victim of lung cancer. He was 80.

On Twitter, the head of state described the South American country's leader as a friend and conveyed "heartfelt condolences to the Uruguayan people and his relatives.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, also on Twitter, also extended condolences to the Frente Amplio and that country's government.

Tabaré Vázquez was the Honorary President of that political force. He was the first of its ranks to win the elections for the Municipality of Montevideo and the country's leadership in 2005-2010 and then 2015-2020.

In compliance with the health measures to control the Covid-19 pandemic and in respect for the will expressed by the former President's family, no funeral was held, and the burial was private.

The President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, decreed two days of national mourning for the death of the Frente Amplio political force leader.
