Havana, July 4 (RHC) –- Lawmakers with the National Defense Commission called for more actions to prevent car accidents on the island, which caused 687 deaths in 2013 alone.

Last year, over 11,600 accidents were reported with 8 thousand 236 injured persons, according to a report submitted to the lawmakers on Thursday.

Government Vice President and Division General Antonio Enrique Lusson recalled that also significant is the railroad traffic, which will increase its number of vehicles and he noted that railroad accidents are even worse since they can multiply the number of fatal victims and property damage.

Cuba registered a 6.5 death rate per every 100 thousand inhabitants due to traffic accidents in 2013, while that indicator reached 26 per every 100 thousand in Latin America and the Caribbean region.
