Havana, Jun 2 (RHC)-- Cuba's Minister of Science, Technology, and Environment (CITMA), Elba Rosa Pérez, heads a delegation participating in the Stockholm+50 International Conference, underway in the Swedish capital.

In a panel held before the event, she called for a change in the unsustainable patterns of production and consumption prevailing in today's world.

She urged the design of new policies, greater use of science and innovation, and the availability of means of implementation, especially financing and capacity building.

"Governments must create conditions for sustainable production and consumption patterns, especially those that lead to a change in the consumerist essence of modern society, in which product obsolescence is programmed to force people to buy new ones," she said.

According to CITMA's general director of Environment, Odalys Goicochea, the meeting will be an opportunity to disseminate the Cuban strategy for the transition to a circular economy, whose principles are based on non-pollution and the optimal use of natural resources and raw materials.

The selection of Cuba to participate in the meeting, together with 58 other countries globally, recognizes the public policies drawn up in the island and its daily work in defense of sustainable and inclusive progress.

The Stockholm+50 International Conference: A Healthy Planet for All - Our Responsibility, Our Opportunity is organized by the government of Sweden, with the support of Kenya, and its purpose is to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

This occasion will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the convening and holding of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (1972) and the 50th anniversary of the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme.
