Havana, June 23 (RHC)--At the 22nd Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) held on Thursday, Cuban candidate Dr. Yamila González Ferrer was elected by 143 votes as a member of the instrument's Supervisory Committee for a three-year term.

The election of Dr. González Ferrer, the most voted candidate in these elections, reflects the acknowledgment of Cuba's humanist work in defense of women's rights, the prestige gained by the country in the United Nations system, and its sustained work within this specialized body.

It is also a recognition of the merits of Dr. Yamila González Ferrer, a prestigious Cuban jurist, vice-president of the National Union of Cuban Jurists (UNJC), full professor at the University of Havana, and member of the National Committee of the Federation of Cuban Women.

Cuba, the first country to sign and the second to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, has contributed nationally and internationally to efforts to guarantee non-discrimination and equal opportunities for girls and women.
