Uruguayan construction workers reject blockade of Cuba

Montevideo, October 31 (RHC)-- Uruguayan construction workers joined today what they called a world day against the blockade applied by the United States to Cuba.

The Sindicato Único Nacional de la Construcción y Anexos (Sunca) made the statement on the eve of the United Nations General Assembly's decision on a draft resolution demanding an end to the economic, financial, and commercial blockade against the Caribbean Island.

We stand in solidarity with our brother and heroic Cuban people and reject the criminal blockade imposed by the United States for more than half a century, we join the request of thousands of social organizations, trade unions, and countries of the world that demand the lifting and end of the blockade on Cuba, the statement said.

Sunca called for respect for the self-determination of the people and international solidarity and concluded that Cuba is not alone.

In the last week, there have been several expressions of support for the Antillean nation in the face of Washington's hostility, including a meeting at the Legislative Palace with the participation of legislators, intellectuals, social activists, and diplomatic representatives from several countries.

This was organized by the Uruguayan chapter of the Network of Intellectuals and Artists in Defense of Humanity, which received a message of support from the Frente Amplio.

Also, an online forum was convened by the departmental representation in Maldonado of the Communist Party of Uruguay.

In his speech, Marcelo Abad, president of the single trade union PIT-CNT, said that support for Cuba is a matter of principle and considered the siege imposed on Cuba as inhuman. (Source: PL)
