Diaz-Canel to participate in 8th CARICOM-Cuba Summit

Bridgetown, December 6 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel will participate in the 8th CARICOM-Cuba Summit to be held Tuesday in Barbados, in the context of the 20th anniversary of the CARICOM-Cuba Day, which has been celebrated every December 8th since 2002, when one of the event was held in Havana for the first time.

This December 8 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, the four independent CARICOM countries at that time, and Cuba.

That historic and courageous act of December 8, 1972 has evolved over the years into a strong fraternal relationship between the member states of the Caribbean Community and Cuba.

The Cuban president arrived yesterday, Monday, in this country on an official visit and was received at the Grantley Adams International Airport in this capital by Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and other officials of her Cabinet.

After holding official talks with the highest authorities of Barbados, during his stay, Díaz-Canel will meet with Cuban collaborators and residents in this territory and will visit the monument commemorating the victims of the terrorist attack against a Cuban passenger plane that was sabotaged off the coast of this Barbados in 1976.

In the context of the CARICOM Summit, the Cuban head of state will hold bilateral meetings with other Caribbean leaders attending the integrationist event.

At present, Cuba maintains relations at the highest level with the States of the Community, based on respect, equality, cooperation and solidarity.

Throughout these years, collaboration with this regional mechanism has been aimed at key areas, such as health, education, agriculture and the fight against climate change.

The CARICOM countries maintain a historic position of rejection of the economic, commercial and financial siege of the United States against Cuba, as expressed in the United Nations and other international forums.
