Freedom Caravan in transit through the eastern province of Holguin.

Holguin, Jan 3 (RHC) Several generations of Holguin residents commemorated Tuesday in this eastern city the transit of the Freedom Caravan, on the 64th anniversary of the historic event that in 1959, took Fidel Castro and the Rebel Army from Santiago de Cuba to Havana.

On its way through the territory, the caravan made up of young people and prominent political leaders repeated the route followed by the combatants, from the municipality of Cacocum to the community of Oscar Lucero, to continue their journey to the province of Las Tunas.

During the day, new members of the Communist Party of Cuba and the Union of Young Communists (UJC) were given the membership card that accredits them as members of these organizations.

Tomás Vidal, member of the Rebel Army and member of the 16th Enrique Hart Column, recalled the struggle waged against the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista, implemented since March 1952.

He indicated that Cuba is an example of unity and solidarity for the peoples of the world, amid a complex panorama of global crisis and the unconventional war perpetrated by the United States.

Yanet Hernández Aguilera, secretary of the provincial committee of the UJC, ratified the commitment of the new generations to the continuity of the economic and social transformations promoted in the country.

Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and first secretary of that political organization in the province, and Julio César Estupiñán, governor of Holguín, together with other political and governmental leaders, were present at the tribute.

Between January 2 and 8, 1959, the Freedom Caravan traveled a route of more than one thousand kilometers followed by the Rebel Army, through which the combatants received the support of the people to the triumphant Cuban Revolution.

Every year children and young people from different spheres reenact the event as a sign of the support of the new generations to the Cuban social process. (Source: ACN)
