Chinese Foreign Ministry

Beijing, Feb 3 (RHC) China today denounced the abuses of the United States with its extraterritorial laws and sanctions against individuals, companies, and countries such as Cuba, Iran, Russia, and Syria, as it also undermined the order and development of international ties.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs delved into an article on the implications, expansion, and dangers of Washington's practice, first established in 1945.

It described the US country as the only sanctioning superpower in the world and mentioned that at the end of the fiscal year 2021, the White House imposed more than 9,400 punitive measures.

The Foreign Ministry cited, as an example, the Helms-Burton Act passed in 1990 to punish individuals and companies that have economic-commercial ties with Cuba, as well as the opposition of the European Union because that tool allows lawsuits to be filed on U.S. soil.

It condemned the extraterritoriality of the U.S. laws and sanctions that hurt the Caribbean Island and also Russia, Iran, Syria, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan, among others.

It underscored the devastating effect on relations between the different nations of the world, peace, and stability of the international order because they proved ineffective and caused humanitarian disasters.

"This is an arbitrary judicial practice used by the U.S. government on the strength of its national power and financial hegemony," the Ministry said.

The Chinese office also exposed how the White House has developed, reinforced, and interconnected for years a massive legal system to implement its coercive policies, regardless of violating the sovereignty of other territories, meddling in internal affairs, and disrespecting their rights.

It accused the persistence of such provisions even in times of Covid-19 and despite the international call to lift them, which prevented the affected countries from having access to the medicines and products necessary to face the health crisis.

Finally, the Foreign Ministry demanded that the United States assume its responsibilities as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and stop resorting to illegal and unilateral sanctions and extraterritorial measures. (Source: PL)
