Cuba highlights multinational efforts to recognize cassava tradition
Havana, Mar 31 (RHC) Cuba, Haiti, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela presented today the candidacy file to inscribe in the list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity the traditional knowledge and practices for the elaboration and consumption of cassava, a product based on the millennial crop of the cassava.
Cuban Vice Minister of Culture Kenelma Carvajal led the island’s delegation and was accompanied by Yahima Esquivel, ambassador to UNESCO, and Sonia Virgen Pérez Mojena, president of the National Council for Cultural Heritage.
According to Carvajal, the multinational file is a means to preserve the identity, history and traditions of the countries involved, and represent an act of unity for the common good and peace.
“We are happy to participate in this project, due to the importance that the Antillean nation attaches to the preservation of memory, traditions and cultural identity”, she expressed.
Regarding the practices associated with the preparation and consumption of cassava, she highlighted that it is part of the inventory framed in the declaration of Creole Cuisine as the nation's cultural heritage. (Source: Prensa Latina)
