Cuba shows concrete outcomes in biodiversity and the environment

Havana, Jul 3 (RHC) Cuba will show the world as of this Monday at the 14th International Convention on the Environment and Development, its results on the management of ecosystems, biodiversity, and climate change.

Among the encounter’s novelties is the presentation of a scientific expedition, which will begin in July a circumnavigation around all the Cuban coasts, in which only researchers from various Cuban institutions will be involved to study the seabed and coastal areas.

In statements to Prensa Latina, the head of the Environment Agency of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment, Maritza Garcia explained this type of circumnavigation is going to be the first bypassed by local specialists, unlike the three previous ones, in which experts from Russia and the United States participated. Such action speaks for itself of the capacity developed by Cuba in marine sciences.

Garcia added outcomes of the sustainable land management program that has been underway for 15 years, along with the United Nations, will also be presented. Nowadays, that program allows exporting products such as mango, avocado, mamey, and tomato, which have been certified by the standards of the international Global agency GAP.

On this issue, she said the agenda of the Convention includes a forum to discuss good environmental, production, and collaboration practices in the Caribbean and Latin America.

She noted the celebration of the 18th Ibero-American Meeting of Directors of Meteorology, where Cuba will show the footprints of climate change from 2020 to 2022 and its contributions to the global summary.

The head of the Environment Agency highlighted the transcendence of the debates on protected areas and the new forms of management and assessment of that national system, which has the responsibility of governing the best and greatest biodiversity the nation has with the participation of the communities and several organizations.

The reprinting of the book on the environmental thoughts of Cuban Revolution’s leader Fidel Castro will be unique due to his transcendental reflections, analysis, and validity, and the tribute to the outstanding geographer, speleologist, and researcher Antonio Nuñez Jimenez.

The 14th International Convention on the Environment and Development will be inaugurated this afternoon at the headquarters of Cuba’s National Aquarium and will last until next Friday, as an integrating dialogue on the crucial issues of climate, the environment, and the promotion of sustainable development.

The encounter will encourage closer cooperation on sustainable practices, inclusive economic growth, and environmental protection, as the Meeting of Ministers and High Authorities on Environment and Science of the Group of 77 + China will be held on Tuesday.

The event is also attended by researchers, authorities, educators, specialists, managers, entrepreneurs, professionals, producers, and other people working for the sustainability of the Earth. (Source: Prensa Latina)
