Havana, December 6 (RHC) The 6th International Congress Dialogue on Human Rights was inaugurated this Wednesday in the Main Hall of the University of Havana, with the presence of legal experts and organizations that support the sustainable development and peace in Cuba and the rest of the world.

The event was chaired by Salvador Valdés Mesa, member of the Political Bureau of the Cuban Communist Party and vice president of the Republic; Oscar Manuel Silvera Martínez, Minister of Justice; and Miriam Nicado García, rector of the university.

The event's main motivations are the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 30 years since the Vienna Declaration and Program of Action, as well as the 295th anniversary of the Havana house of higher education.

Yuri Pérez Martínez, professor of Constitutional and Administrative Law at the UH, expressed that the event promotes critical analysis and scientific debate in relation to the recognition and comprehensive protection of rights as a support for democracy.

He pointed out that 75 years after the Declaration of Human Rights, the ideals of freedom, justice, peace, equity and equality are still criteria for legitimizing political power and foundations of society.

Pérez said that currently these precepts require the rejection and condemnation of war crimes and crimes against humanity, such as the one against Palestine.

He stated that the congress will become a platform of support for the cause of that people, who since last October 7 have suffered constant attacks by Israeli forces.

The also president of the Organizing Committee of the congress stated that human rights are concrete expressions of the primary values and principles of any democratic order, so achieving their recognition and effective protection is a priority.

For his part, Elio Rodríguez Perdomo, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, highlighted that the Congress has allowed to show on previous occasions how Washington’s economic, commercial and financial blockade on Cuba is a flagrant violation of the rights of the Cuban people.
