Cuba rejects the existenceof more than 800 US military bases and facilities around the world

Havana, Jan 23 (RHC) The Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) and the World Peace Council convene the 8th International Seminar on Peace and for the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases, to be held on May 4 and 5 in Guantánamo.

Cuba rejects the existence of more than 800 military bases and facilities that the United States owns with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) around the world, of which 70 are located in the Latin American and Caribbean region.

This reality contradicts the postulates of the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, approved at the 2nd CELAC Summit by all the heads of State and Government of the region, gathered in Havana in January 2014.

Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla denounced that, days before the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of that proclamation, the US Assistant Undersecretary of Defense made statements in Guyana, announcing the intensification and increase of the American military capacity.

The ICAP and the World Peace Council, organizers of the International Seminar, indicated that making this situation visible is one of the objectives of the event, for which they call on peace advocates, researchers and specialists committed to denouncing the existence of arbitrary foreign military bases and installations, to participate in the seminar.

Cubainformacion explained that the main topics that will be addressed are the challenges and threats facing world peace, with the advance of the so-called "cyberwar"; the existence of weapons of mass extermination; the threat to world peace and international security; and the fight against armaments; the increase in military budgets and other causes that undermine peace in the world.

The event will take place in Guantánamo, where there is a US military base, against the will of the Cuban people and government. (Source: Granma)
