Havana, January 27 (RHC) --Young people in Cuba will reenact tonight the traditional March of the Torches that, as 71 years ago, pays tribute to National Hero José Martí, on the 171st anniversary of his birth this January 28.

According to the newspaper Juventud Rebelde (JR), members of the country's youth and student organizations will light the torches "with the same fire that the Centennial Generation, led by Fidel Castro (in 1953), and illuminated the dignified future of Cuba".

The organizers of the march call to descend the steps of the University of Havana (UH) to reaffirm that the youth of today, Marti and Fidelista, will not let the Apostle (José Martí) or his ideas die either.

The colorful and multitudinous parade -usually attended by the highest authorities of the nation-, continues to be fervor, passion, commitment and unity of a people determined to defend their sovereignty, independence and the conquests of the Revolution, JR published.

A group of organizational measures were ordered by the provincial Road Safety Commission of Havana to ensure mobility during the March of the Torches.

In that sense, several streets of the capital's Plaza de la Revolución municipality will be closed and parking will be prohibited, due to the walk that will take place from the UH Stairway to the Forge of Martí, according to a note issued by the capital's government.

According to the newspaper Juventud Rebelde (JR), members of the country's youth and student organizations will light the torches "with the same fire that the Centennial Generation, led by Fidel Castro (in 1953), and illuminated the dignified future of Cuba".

At midnight on January 27, 1953, the first of these convocations of the student body of the Caribbean island was held, then to await the advent of the centenary of the birth of José Martí, considered the most universal of Cubans.

According to national historiography, that initiative meant an act of protest against the crimes of dictator Fulgencio Batista (1952-1958), who had seized power a year before through a coup d'état.   (Source: Prensa Latina)
