The trial began in the eastern province of Camagüey
Havana, March 28 (RHC) A new clinical trial on poliomyelitis began in Cuba at the request of the World Health Organization, as the country has not presented any reported cases of polio since its eradication.
The trial is being carried out in the eastern province of Camagüey and seeks to investigate whether a 0.1 mL dose of the Inactivated Poliovirus Vaccine is more effective than the 0.5 mL dose used in other countries.
Cuba was the first country in America to eliminate this highly contagious childhood disease, since 1962.
The study includes 39 infants born between June and August 2023 and is divided into two phases: the first began this March, and the second is scheduled between April and May, as reported by local radio station Radio Cadena Agramonte.
According to Belkis Hernández García, leader of the clinical trial, the team has been working since March on recruiting participants, obtaining the consent of parents, and informing them about the objectives of the survey.
Every year Cuba carries out the anti-polio vaccination campaign to immunize all boys and girls between one month old and up to two years, and those who are nine years old or up to nine years. (Source: PL)
