New York, June 28 (RHC) -- On Friday, Cuba deposited the instrument of ratification of the Agreement within the framework of the United Nations convention on the Law of the Sea regarding the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in the areas located outside national jurisdiction (BBNJ).

The ratification of this agreement by Cuba is a sign of the special importance it gives to international cooperation in the management of marine resources, the care of the oceans and their biodiversity.

The BBNJ Agreement constitutes a fundamental step forward towards better and more effective governance of the world's Oceans and Seas. It also strengthens the regime for the exploitation of marine resources, which will have a direct impact on many developing countries, most of them small island states.

Its adoption last year meant a victory for developing countries, and a demonstration that unity and multilateralism are more necessary than ever to face the enormous current and future challenges of humanity.

The instrument of ratification was deposited by Ambassador Yuri Gala López, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations.    (Cubaminrex)
