President Lopez Obrador thanks Cuba for sending doctors

Mexico City, July 16 (RHC) Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador today reiterated his gratitude to the people and government of Cuba for sending doctors to this North American nation.

“We are very grateful for the support of the people and the government of Cuba, because they are helping us by sending doctors,” said the president during his usual press conference.

For his part, the general director of the Mexican Social Security Institute, Zoé Robledo, informed that 2,700 doctors from Cuba will join the 950 doctors from the island already working in the public health system.

“In the latest agreement, in addition to the 950 doctors who are already working in 23 states of the country, 2,700 of these specialties that I have just mentioned are joining: mainly Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Emergency care,” he said.

The official said that this will ensure that community hospitals, mainly located in rural or highly marginalized areas, will have an adequate staff of professionals.

López Obrador highlighted the results of the IMSS-Bienestar program, aimed at assisting those who lack social security.

“We are talking about half of the population and, in general terms, these are the people with the least economic resources, the poorest people; therefore, progress is being made in this area and I consider that we are doing well,” he emphasized. (Source: PL)
