Havana, November 13 (RHC)-- “With deep pain, we learned a few minutes ago of the death of Dr. Jorge González Pérez, our beloved Popi, a paradigm of Medicine and Science in Cuba.”  This was reported through social media by the Minister of Public Health, José Ángel Portal Miranda.

“On behalf of the health workers, we send our condolences to his family, friends and coworkers.”

Jorge González Pérez was a prominent forensic expert and Doctor of Legal Medicine, as well as a founding member of the Cuban Society of Legal Medicine.

In 1995, he was assigned the mission of traveling to Bolivia as a representative of the relatives of Che Guevara and the other Cuban combatants who died alongside him in the Guerrilla and Internationalist Mission of 1967 in that Latin American country.   Jorge led the search for his remains for more than five years, leading a group of Cuban scientists and experts, committed to this work of inquiry and research, which culminated in the identification of Commander Ernesto Che Guevara and his fellow fighters, who were killed in combat in this Andean region.

Jorge Gonzalez was a deputy to the National Assembly in Cuba from 1998 to 2003, being reelected for the period 2003-2008, during which he held the position of President of the Health and Sports Commission of Parliament, in addition to being President of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Bolivia on both occasions.   He was ratified as a deputy on April 18, 2018, at the constitutive session of the IX Legislature, held at the Havana Convention Center.

Jorge Gonzalez was also rector of the University of Medical Sciences of Havana.
