Cuban President Raul Castro Sends Condolences to Saudi King After Fatal Stampede

Riyadh, September 30 (RHC)-- Cuban President Raul Castro has sent his condolences to Saudi Arabia´s King Salman bin Abdulaziz following a stampede that took place during the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to the Mecca, in the locality of Mina, which resulted in hundreds of deaths, diplomatic sources announced.

A note issued at the Cuban embassy in Riyadh explained that the Cuban leader sent his message to the monarch for the tragedy, which also led to over 900 injured, according to official figures, Prensa Latina news agency reported on Wednesday.

The Cuban president also sent his sympathies to the relatives of the victims, according to the communiqué, referring to the accident that occurred September 24th in the locality of Mina, about five kilometers from the Mecca.

The stampede occurred when the pilgrims headed to the Jamarat brigade to the “Stoning of the Devil” ritual.

The Hajj General Committee calculated that some 2 million Islamic pilgrims from over 60 nations were participating at the largest annual religious procession in the world.
