BRICS very active with a view to Kazan

By Roberto Morejón

The BRICS promote a global political and economic equilibrium against a backdrop of accentuated inequalities, so much so that the industrialized North is beginning to view the group with aversion.

The gross domestic product of the BRICS has tripled, from around $10 trillion in 2009 to nearly $27 trillion in 2023, in the midst of a process of numerical expansion that several nations are seeking to join.

This year, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia have joined the economic alliance known by the acronym BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).

The economic grouping has its attractions, including the creation of an alternative to the Western financial system led by the United States and its European allies.

But beyond the economic exercise, which is undoubtedly strategic, the grouping promotes a political balance when the traditional powers insist on consolidating their patterns, which they consider to be the only democratic ones.

In turn, the BRICS contribute to the promotion of a just and orderly multipolar world and economic globalization for the benefit of all, according to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

It is precisely the intention of several BRICS members that the development of the planet should not leave aside the needs of the most economically backward countries, one of the most interesting statements for the latter.

With Russia at the forefront of those who advocate reducing dependence on the dollar, it is logical that at the summit in the Russian city of Kazan in October, the BRICS will consolidate their influence in the international context as an option to the institutions of big capital, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

For the global South, with more than a few examples of suffocation when accepting the demands of these bodies to grant loans, it represents a hope that such an important bloc will incorporate new airs to the planet's foreign trade, and it could be so, judging by the words of leaders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, who pointed out that future progress will not be concentrated in Europe or North America, but in the BRICS countries, as the former lose positions.
