Havana Biennial

October 28 (RHC)-- Organizers of the 14th Havana Biennial have confirmed that the event will take place as originally planned and blasted attempts to boycott the most important virtual arts event in Cuba.

During a press conference in Havana, the president of the organizing committee Nelson Ramirez de Arellano, commented that a team of curators from the Wilfredo Lam Center for Contemporary Art, which organizes the event, have been working tirelessly since late 2019.

He insisted that the decision to host the Biennial responds to the expressed interest of artists themselves.

Ramirez de Arellano explained that the event is conceived and designed taking into account the country’s reality and in strong collaboration with Cuban and foreign institutions guided by a common interest in promoting culture.

The cultural official stressed that since its inception 40 years ago, the Havana Biennial has served as a meeting point for visual artists from Cuba and other Third World nations, representatives of different styles, aesthetics and ideologies.

He said that the organizers are intent on honoring that legacy, defending the Biennial as an anti-hegemony space that favors dialogue, and defends the right of artists to create, express themselves, exchange, share and promote their art. It recognizes the value of culture to promote a better understanding among human beings toward more inclusive societies.

The president of the organizing committee of the Biennial said those who today try to boycott the event, tomorrow will try to boycott any other cultural event or festival, because their true aim is to denigrate, attack Cuba’s cultural policy and its undeniable achievements over six decades of Revolution.

He thanked those, who have raised their voice in support of the Havana Biennial and the more than 300 artists from all continents who have confirmed their participation in the top visual art event in Cuba, set for November 12th 2021 through April 30th, 2022 with the theme ‘Futuro y Contemporaneidad’ (Future and Contemporaneity).
