Havana, July 19 (RHC)-- Dedicated to poet Georgina Herrera, the first Week for Afro-Latin, Afro-Caribbean and Diaspora Women began Monday in Havana, focusing on social alternatives to improve their quality of life.

Until July 25, the meeting will articulate the work of groups of activists, feminists and anti-racists, academics from different scientific disciplines, representatives at various levels of the National Program for the Advancement of Women and institutions.

The University of Havana, research centers, actors of the National Program against Racism and Racial Discrimination, the Federation of Cuban Women, the Ministry of Culture, the Institute of Information and Social Communication and the Platform for Participation and Equity will be involved.

The event takes place within the framework of the commemoration of the International Day of Afro-Latino, Afro-Caribbean and Diaspora Women, which has been held every July 25 since 1992 to make their work visible and promote policies aimed at improving their quality of life, eradicating racism and discrimination and promoting personal and social development.

According to the document, the event is consistent with the actions developed in recent years in the largest of the Antilles, where activist groups carry out activities related to the date, although greater integration is needed to achieve the impact that the date deserves.

Oral storytellers, instrumentalists and singers will be in charge of the event's cultural moment, while the colloquium conceived in the calendar will address central issues such as racism and anti-racism, contributions to history, culture and science, and presence in the media.

Among the venues chosen for the event are the Yara cinema, the Varona Amphitheater of the University of Havana, the Covarrubias Hall of Cuba's National Theater
