Havana, March 11 (RHC)-- Cuban long jumper Juan Miguel Echevarria made a phenomenal leap of 8.92 meters in the final of the 2019 Cuba Athletics Cup last Sunday at Havana´s Pan-American Stadium.
Nevertheless, the record won´t be homologated , since it was achieved with a tailwind that exceeded 2 meters per second, it was actually of 3.3 m/s. But the new revelation of long jump on the island, continues gertting near to the world record by Mike Powell.
20-year old Echevarria, winner of the gold medal in the World Indoor Championship in Birmingham, UK, last year, has a personal best in the current season of 8.21m, which earned him the title at the Grand Prix based in the same city of Birmingham, last February.
The young Cuban ace is already considered one of the global stars of athletics as in addition to become last year universal indoor monarch, he also jumped 8.83 metres at the IAAF Diamond League stop of Stockholm, although it wasn´t either homologated due to wind assistance of 2.1m/s.
