Cuban taekwondo family celebrates first Olympic victory

Havana, June 6 (ACN)-- Cuba accumulated nine gold medals in the combat modality in the first Havana Taekwondo Open, held at the Sports City Coliseum.

Led by Olympic bronze medalist and two-time world champion Rafael Alba, the hosts left no doubt of their strength and dominated by far, followed by the Dominicans, other top-level fighters.

In addition to the triumph of the super heavyweight from Santiago de Cuba, two-time world champion and Olympic bronze medalist, the victories of the Quiqueyans Bernardo and Luis Pie against the Peruvian Braulio Leon and the Cuban Brian Jose Cantero stood out.

Previously, Cuba conquered practically all the titles in poomsae (imaginary combat), with highlights for Dario Enrique and Diego Enrique Navarro, as well as Pedro Pablo Escalona and Tania Indira Delgado, among others, in a specialty in which only the Nicaraguan Sofia Verdugo was able to snatch a gold medal from the Cubans, in a hard fight with the Cuban Karen Alejandra del Valle.
