Havana, July 27 (RHC) -- The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel congratulated Javier Sotomayor on Thursday, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of setting his record in the high jump.

Through his Twitter profile, the president celebrated the fact that the man who has been closest to the sky on his own feet is Cuban.

On the same social network, Osvaldo Vento Montiller, president of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Inder) pointed out that the high jump world record set by Sotomayor is one of several feats registered by the man who has always proudly represented Cuba, which once again applauds and celebrates with him.

On July 27, 1993, in the world championship of athletics held in Salamanca, Spain, Sotomayor set his record of 2.45 meters in the high jump, which has not been equaled or surpassed in three decades.

That same year, she was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Sports.

Throughout her sports career, Sotomayor won one Olympic title, two world championships, four indoor championships and three Pan American titles, among others.
