Cuban duo wins NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit 2024
Havana, Oct 5 (RHC) - The duo of Damian Gomez and Eblis Veranes was titled champion of the fifth phase of the Norceca Beach Volleyball Circuit 2024, which concluded at Los Corales beach in the Dominican Republic's international resort of Punta Cana.
The combative and young couple overcame in the final the hosts Hayerlin De Jesús and Rolvin Maldonado 2-0 (21-19, 21-19) in 40 minutes of action to seal their undefeated showing in five matches.
The Guantanameros agreed that they prepared very well under the guidance of experienced coach Walfrido Zayas and dedicated the medal to Eblis' mother.
Damian and Eblis made their international debut in the second round of this circuit in Varadero, last May, and then their preparation included some training in tournaments in Morocco and in the national championship of Russia, which undoubtedly reinforced their physical and technical-tactical level.
They were victorious in their group against the Salvadoran brothers Yoel and Christopher Guardado 2-0 (21-19, 21-17) and the Americans Lev Priima and David Wieczorek 2-1 (19-21, 21-14, 15-13); in the quarterfinals they defeated Jesario Ebanks-Stephen Watson, from Cayman Islands, in two identical sets of 21-14 and the Canadians Tynan Gannett-Rouzbeh Rahnavard 2-1 (23-21, 21-23, 15-10) in the semifinals.
The bronze medal was won precisely by this northern duo after beating Garrett Bucklin and William Clements, from the U.S. Virgin Islands, 2-0 (21-12, 21-11). Meanwhile, Cuba's Maykelin Drik-Mileidy Paret finished in eleventh place among the ladies by dominating Heather Thompson-Joanna Robinson of the Cayman Islands 2-0 (21-19, 21-15), the only win in four matches.
The next stage is scheduled for the 7th, 8th and 9th in the Dominican tourist emporium, only for under 23 year olds and a qualifier for the Junior Pan American Games of Asuncion 2025.
