Chile Blows Whistle on Soccer Racism

Just before the Copa America tournament kicks off this week in Chile, the host country has passed a new law coming down hard on racism and violence in soccer.

Fans and clubs alike will be subject to fines and prison sentences for violations including discrimination, racism and xenophobia, both at games and at training sessions. "We want to make sure that fans and families can enjoy the game safely and in pleasant conditions," said Interior Minister Jorge Burgos.

Copa America, the biggest soccer tournament in the Americas, will be battled out between 12 sides from June 11th to July 4th, beginning with Chile vs Ecuador on Thursday. The hosts will be keen to take a tough stance against discriminatory behavior after a string of racist incidents at soccer games there, such as when a match was suspended in November after fans reduced a player to tears with racist chants.
