Brasilia, July 8 (RHC)-- Former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said the best option to secure victory for the left wing in the upcoming 2018 presidential elections would be to present a unified front of several leftist parties. Lula's Workers' Party, or PT, reached a political alliance with the right-wing Brazilian Democratic Movement Party and then‐Vice President Michel Temer for the presidential elections of 2010 and 2014 with Dilma Rousseff. Temer later led the impeachment process against Rousseff and was appointed the president by Congress, in a move her supporters call a legislative coup with no evidence of wrongdoing. Lula said his party will seek an alliance with parties that have common interests, such as the Socialist Party of Brazil, the Democratic Labor Party and the Communist Party of Brazil. A recent poll by Vox Populi Institute revealed that Lula is leading polls for the 2018 presidential race and that he would win free, democratic elections if they were held today, with 52 percent of the overall vote. Lula says he is still waiting for the consent of his party to formally launch his candidacy for president.
