Tehran, January 7 (RHC)-- Iran has reportedly retaliated for the killing of a top general by firing more than a dozen ballistic missiles at two Iraqi military air bases housing U.S. troops on Wednesday local time.

Pentagon officials said there was no question about the source of the missiles, and the Iranian government quickly claimed responsibility.

"It is clear that these missiles were launched from Iran and targeted at least two Iraqi military bases hosting U.S. military and coalition personnel," the Defense Department said in a statement.

It was unclear whether there was any damage to the Ain al-Asad air base, which President Donald Trump visited last year, or whether there were any casualties.

Iranian state TV described it as Tehran’s revenge operation over the killing of top Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, according to an early report by the Associated Press.
