Port au Prince, May 23 (PL-RHC) -- In Port au Prince, the Prime Minister of Haiti, Laurent Lamothe, welcomed the approval of a bill on naturalization by the Congress of the Dominican Republic.
The initiative, which was backed by the Senate and the House of Representatives, also focuses on establishing special provisions for persons born in the Dominican Republic who were irregularly registered in the Civil Registry.
According to Lamothe's tweets, the Haitian Government welcomes that decision and notes progress for naturalizing people who were stateless persons.
In late September, the Constitutional Court decided to deny the Dominican nationality to children of undocumented immigrants. This judgment, with a broad rejection within and outside the country, was backdated to 1929 and had a great impact on Haitian descendants.
In this regard, Dominican President Danilo Medina promised to find a humanitarian, measured and responsible solution for those affected.
