Mexico City, July 23 (RHC)-- Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has urged Israel to attend to the extradition request of the former chief director of the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC), Tomás Zerón, for accusations against him of tampering with evidence in the Ayotzinapa case.

In his daily press conference, AMLO said: "There has been no response yet.  Hopefully the Government of Israel will act with respect for human rights because the extradition of this public official is being requested, among other things, for acts of torture."

López Obrador also pointed to an article published by the U.S. media citing anonymous sources to reveal that Israel had stopped the extradition process of Zerón, in response to Mexico's vote in favor of investigating human rights violations in Palestine.

The Mexican president indicated that his country's Secretary of Foreign Affairs Marcelo Ebrard had sent a note to the Israeli Embassy in order to know the veracity of the version spread by the U.S. press.

Zerón is not only linked in the Latin American nation for the disappearance of the 43 students from Ayotzinapa, but also for being allegedly responsible for the contracting of espionage services with the Israeli company NSO Group.

An espionage scandal involving this company was recently uncovered.  Through the Pegasus spy program, the entity would have tapped the communications of at least 15,000 politicians, activists and journalists during the six-year term of former Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018).
