Mexico City, November 11 (RHC)-- Mexico City has received the award that gave the city the Guinness World Record for having more sites with free Internet connection globally, as it has 21,500 points.

The recognition was delivered to the head of government of the Mexican capital, Claudia Sheinbaum, by the official Guinness World Records adjudicator for Latin America, Carlos Tapia, in an event held in front of monument to the Angel of Independence.

On the occasion, Sheinbaum expressed that "these 21,500 points are for the benefit and to create rights, the right to the Internet for everyone.  This is what we are achieving today in the City."

She also thanked the state-owned Telmex because "this is a joint effort. (...) Let's go for more, let's go for the public schools of Mexico City, let's go for the high schools of the Instituto de Educación Media Superior and for the universities of the City."

Mexico City is already the city with the most free WiFi points in the world.  At a press conference, the head of the Digital Agency for Public Innovation (ADIP), José Antonio Merino, reported that the city is 500 points ahead of Moscow (capital of Russia), 8,000 ahead of Seoul (South Korea) and 11,000 ahead of Tokyo (Japan).

He recalled that in 2019 the Mexican capital was ranked 85th globally, as it had less than 100 points.  He explained that the network configuration has 100 megabytes of capacity with a navigation guarantee of three megabytes.  There are no data registration forms and there are no time restrictions for its use.

He highlighted that this achievement cost zero pesos to the inhabitants of Mexico City and advanced that the local government will begin to integrate network connection posts in public schools.

He also thanked Sheinbaum for her support, for her intervention in the expansion of the Command, Control, Computing, Communications and Citizen Contact Center (known as C5) and for the participation of the private sector.
