Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador confirmed that he will not attend the IX Summit of the Americas, which began Monday in Los Angeles, California.

Mexico City, June 6 (RHC)-- Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador confirmed that he will not attend the IX Summit of the Americas, which began Monday in Los Angeles, California.

"I am not going to the Summit because not all the countries of the Americas are invited; and I believe in the need to change the policy that has been imposed for centuries, the exclusion, the desire to dominate without any reason," said the president during his morning press conference on Monday in Mexico City.

López Obrador said that the Mexican government will be represented at the continental event by Secretary of Foreign Affairs Marcelo Ebrard.

During the press briefing, the president pointed out that "there cannot be a Summit of the Americas if all the countries of the American continent do not participate"; and in the event that it does take place under such conditions, he considers that "it is a continuation of the old policy of interventionism, of disrespect for nations and their peoples".

The Mexican president had conditioned his participation in this Summit to the U.S. inviting all the countries of the region, after excluding Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela from the event.

Last week, López Obrador said he was waiting for a reply from the host regarding his conditioning. "We are going to wait for the response of what we are raising, but I insist, there is no hurry, we are very close. Fortunately, there are several flights to Tijuana and from there by road to Los Angeles", he said at the time.
