May Golan, an outspoken racist and Islamophobic, has been appointed consul in the United States

Tel Aviv, April 24 (RHC) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could reverse his decision to appoint May Golan -an outspoken racist and Islamophobic- consul general of Israel in New York, the press revealed on Sunday.

The Times of Israel reported that Golan's nomination aroused concern among Jewish and American leaders, as well as in Israel, due also to her anti-feminism and support for radical groups.

The newspaper stated that the main Jewish associations in New York will not welcome the current Israeli legislator because of her supremacist positions.

Jill Jacobs, executive director of the rabbinical human rights group T'ruah, said that "this appointment would be another affront to the Netanyahu government...and an offense to people, both Jewish and non-Jewish".

From her fondness for violent anti-Arab radicals to her hatred of feminists as well as racist and Islamophobic treatment, Golan's politics are far removed from the vision of New York Jews, Jacobs stressed.

Golan began her political career campaigning for the expulsion of African asylum seekers, from which she never backed down.

At a rally held in 2012 in this city, she stated that she is proud to be a racist. “We are racist because we want to preserve our lives and our sanity. I am proud to be a racist. If I am racist to preserve my life, then I am proud”.

In an interview with the Hebrew daily Haaretz in 2014, Golan alleged that the migrants posed a health risk. A few days ago, State Department spokesman Vedant Patel criticized those statements, but did not censure her appointment.

The New York consulate is considered one of the most important posts in Israel's foreign relations because it is responsible for managing ties in a geographic area that is home to the world's largest Jewish community, The Times noted.

For its part, Channel 12 revealed that her appointment provoked rejection in the Foreign Ministry, as several diplomats questioned the choice of such an "unworthy candidate."

The position of consul general of New York has been vacant since last month after the resignation of Asaf Zamir, who resigned in protest of a judicial reform proposed by Netanyahu. (Source: Prensa Latina)
