San Juan, June 29 (RHC)-- Hundreds of demonstrators, including religious leaders, intellectuals, economists, teachers and retirees, took to the streets of Puerto Rico on Wednesday to protest against a proposal to increase electricity bills amid a payment crisis due to the high rates imposed.

The march headed in the direction of the governor's mansion, outside of which they raised Puerto Rican flags and held signs warning that an increase in electricity bills would further complicate the unsustainable situation surrounding the cost of living on the island.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, residential electricity prices in Puerto Rico are twice as expensive as in the U.S. mainland, while industrial and commercial rates exceed that already inflated quota.
