Updated electoral calendar in Ecuador
Quito, Sep 1 (RHC) The calendar for the second round of the elections to elect the next president of the Republic in Ecuador is moving forward with updated dates, according to the National Electoral Council (CNE).
According to the chronogram, the campaign for the runoff will be from September 24 to October 12, although the candidates for the head of the Executive, Luisa Gonzalez, of the Citizen Revolution, and Daniel Noboa, of the National Democratic Action alliance, are already looking for votes.
The televised debate between both is scheduled for Sunday, October 1, and that same day a simulation will be carried out to evaluate the logistic conditions for the voting day, which will be held on Sunday, October 15.
Three days before the voting day, those deprived of their liberty and those elderly or disabled people who have their ballots delivered to their homes will have the opportunity to vote.
On October 13, the electoral silence will begin, as well as the dry law, which will last until Monday 16, one day after the democratic day.
What the published schedule does not specify is the date for the delivery of the credentials accrediting the 137 assembly members as legislators, a key step, because the new parliament must be in office for the new president's inauguration.
The calendar made public does not specify when the governor will take office, although it is estimated to be at the end of November or in December of this year.
On Thursday night, the CNE made official the results of the first electoral round and confirmed Gonzalez and Noboa as the contenders that will pass to the second round. In addition, the governing body of the elections clarified that the definition of the assembly members in national representation and of the Ecuadorians abroad is still pending, since the migrants will again choose the legislators on October 15, the same day of the run-off.
Regarding the popular consultation related to the conservation of the Yasuní National Park, the CNE ratified the decision of 58.95 percent of the citizens to leave the oil in the area in the ground, with which the one year term for Petroecuador to abandon the area begins to count. (Source:PL)
