He said this was important in view of the upcoming 20th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP20) that is to be held in Peru in December this year.
Delivering his keynote address to the 69th UN General Assembly in New York, President Humala reaffirmed the need to organize the biggest alliance in history to tackle this transcendental challenge as “its agreements will craft the future of our civilization”.
Of the forthcoming COP20, he said: “Discussions will be important, but national commitments will be essential... We should address the capitalization of the Green Fund, within a comprehensive strategy in which all those involved take on their responsibility and adopt binding solutions,” he added.
In his view, world leaders must be conscious of the dimensions of climate changes and global warming which proves humanity ‘has achieved for the first time the ability of mass destruction without resorting to nuclear energy’.
Peru recently ratified the Nagoya Protocol to the Convention on Biological Biodiversity that will soon enter into force, in order to promote the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from Genetic Resources.
Humala reiterated the commitment of the Peruvian government to its objectives and also to call upon the international community to participate actively with a constructive spirit so as to benefit our peoples.
