Hashem Ghazal, leading figure in Palestine’s deaf community, killed with his wife in Israeli airstrike

Gaza City, May 14 (RHC)-- As the death toll in Gaza tops 35,000, Palestinians are mourning the killing of Hashem Ghazal, a disability rights advocate who was known as Gaza’s “Godfather of the Deaf.”  Hashem Ghazal was killed in an Israeli airstrike along with his wife.  They had nine children, seven of whom were reportedly severely injured in the strike.

On the social network X, a tribute to Hashem and his wife was posted.  

"Hashem Ghazal and his wife, spiritual pillars and role models for the deaf community in Gaza, were killed today due to the ruthless aggression by the Israeli army.  Their home was bombed by the Israeli army, resulting in the killing of their entire deaf family!

"Hashem Ghazal, the Godfather for Gaza’s deaf community, was k!lled today along with his wife, in another ruthless aggression by the Israeli army.   Seven of his children were severely injured. 

"The family had established wood workshop for deaf carpenters, providing invaluable opportunities for a community often overlooked.

"Hashem Ghazal’s influence remains deeply ingrained in the hearts of those he touched, embodying resilience and unwavering dedication to improving the lives of deaf individuals in Gaza.  Through collaborative projects with Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children, we had the privilege of knowing Ghazal and experiencing firsthand his infectious enthusiasm, genuine warmth, and commitment to inclusivity.

"As we mourn the loss of a true champion for the deaf community, we are reminded of the fragility of life and the importance of continuing Ghazal’s legacy through the countless lives transformed by Atfaluna’s education, vocational training, and income-generating programs.  His selfless spirit and tireless advocacy will continue to inspire generations to come."
