Brasilia, October 22 (teleSUR-RHC), -- Some 3000 members of Brazil’s academic community along with representatives from various Brazilian social movements, have signed an open letter, highlighting the ways in which the Brazilian media, stock market activity and the country’s electoral court have aimed to undermine Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff’s reelection campaign efforts.

The letter reads that mainstream media outlets have consistently pointed out instances of corruption within Dilma Rousseff's administration while leaving out various cases of corruption during Aecio Neves’ two terms as governor of the Brazilian State of Minas Gerais. This shows a pattern of double standards in media coverage throughout the presidential elections.

In a Brazil Magazine interview with former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Lula warned the public “to be alert” in the midst of a effort by the media to discredit the accomplishments of Rousseff's administration.

According to Human Rights Professor at the Catholic University of Brasilia, Marili Quadros, despite the increase in organized social movements, political discussions are still largely manipulated by traditional media outlets.

"The media has spoken for centuries about politics in Brazil, however they have tended to analyze political issues without any deeper reflection,” Quadros stated.
